Innovation in Cotton Cultivation: The New Cotton Seed Agro Varieties
03 March, 2025
Cotton is one of the top three agricultural crops in Greece, playing a vital role in the national economy. It is one of the country’s key export products, with 80% of Europe’s cotton production coming from Greece, and the nation ranking 7th globally in cotton exports.
At Agrohellas, innovation and research are fundamental pillars of our strategy. Our Research & Development (R&D) Department, consisting of 17 specialized scientists, implements a comprehensive system to develop genetic material that meets the challenges of modern agriculture. The department’s mission is to address the impacts of climate change and develop resilient genetic material that can withstand biotic and abiotic stresses such as high temperatures, salinity, and diseases.
The development of new varieties follows a comprehensive approach, beginning with in-depth scientific research aimed at identifying the most advantageous genetic traits. Next, the varieties are improved with a focus on resistance and high yield potential. Rigorous field testing under real farming conditions ensures a reliable assessment of their performance. Finally, the best solutions are introduced to growers, with the goal of maximizing yield, ensuring sustainable production, and enhancing the overall efficiency of the agricultural sector.

The New Cotton Seed Agro Varieties
Agrohellas proudly introduces three new early-maturing cotton varieties to the Greek market: Agro A67, Agro A74, and Agro A94. These varieties have been developed in Greece, specifically tailored to the needs of local farmers and adapted to the country’s soil and climate conditions.
Agro A67 is an early-maturing cotton variety with exceptional yield potential. It thrives in all soil types, especially in fertile soils, and is characterized by excellent germination and rapid early growth, ensuring a strong establishment of the crop. It starts fruiting from the 5th node, ensuring excellent boll retention. Additionally, it responds well to irrigation and growth regulators, making it easy for growers to manage. This variety is resistant to Verticillium wilt and saline soils, while also offering a high fiber yield, making it an ideal choice for farmers targeting both quantity and quality.
Agro A74 is another early-maturing variety, highly adaptable to all soil types. It is a robust plant with excellent drought tolerance, making it perfect for water-scarce regions. It maintains its high yield potential in both irrigated and rainfed conditions, offering flexibility to growers. It also has resistance to Verticillium wilt and produces high-quality cottonseed with a superior fiber yield, enhancing the economic viability of cotton farming.
Agro A94 stands out for its wide adaptability and its ability to perform exceptionally well across different soil types. It is particularly suitable for non-irrigated fields, thanks to its excellent drought resistance, ensuring stable yields even under water-limited conditions. This variety also boasts resistance to Verticillium wilt and provides a high fiber yield, making it a reliable choice for farmers seeking durability and productivity. Additionally, it is easy to manage and delivers consistent yields, ensuring a strong return on investment for growers.
